What is Corporate Psychology?

We spend long hours at work.  And most of us like to think that what we do is important and valuable.  We want interesting and challenging work, and we want to be appreciated.  Yet, we are often so much disappointed and distressed with events at work as to need the help of a so called mental health professional.

Corporate Psychology or Work Psychology deals with the psychology of work, working conditions, and human performance.  It is about people who work for corporations of all sizes, including the one person corporations.  Corporate Psychology is not about profits ... more

What is Mental Fitness®?

The expression Mental Fitness was first coined in 1997 by Dr. Yanina Shapiro, to mark a new kind of psychology.  That psychology would have nothing to do with the field of Mental-Health- as-we-know- it, leaving all clinical diagnoses and medical prescriptions to psychiatrists, who are medical doctors.  Instead, the Mental Fitness Psychology would help the man and woman on the street make themselves smarter and better and more successful by exercising their brains and utilizing their talents and abilities to the fullest.

The phrase Mental Fitness has been used in our company name since 1997 and In January 6, 1998 it was filed as our registered trademark with the US Office of Patents and Trademarks.  Not known for fast processing, the. USPTO finally issued our registered trademark of Mental Fitness® in the end of November, 2000.  Meantime, thanks to the Internet, the phrase has been appropriated by many an individual and organization to mean whatever they please, which more often than not is the Mental Health thing.

"Mental Health" is really a misnomer, because the filed of mental health deals with diseases of the human mind Mental health is about patients and doctors, and about trying to find past reasons for the present mishaps and failures.  Mental Fitness®, and there is only one Mental Fitness®, is very different.  Mental Fitness® deals with Mental Health Problems PREVENTION .... more

What We Do

  1. Assist organizations in reengineering their investments in human capital to yield the best return and highest retention rates. When the economy is good, we assist employers in developing effective strategies for the employee retention.  When the economy leaves much to be desired, we help employers and employees handle the difficult situations of 'downsizing'
  2. Assist individuals in getting where they wan to be in life by providing the scaffolding they need to reach their highest cognitive potential and to fulfil their most daring aspirations.  We help individuals find their dream jobs and improve their performance and job satisfaction.  Whether you are a displaced employee or just looking for a better job, we can help you get where you want to be in life.
  3. Design and deliver training that is tailored to the needs of our customers and based on the latest well confirmed research of the science of human minds and brains.
  4. Fill in the information gap by delivering to corporate America and the US Government knowledge about the human brain - how it is affected by drug and alcohol consumption, for instance, as well as more benign activities

What Makes Us Different

We stay abreast of current developments in Brain & Social Sciences via continuous research and writing.  All our consultants, trainers, and coaches have earned the highest academic credentials (Ph.D., EdD or their equivalents) in Cognitive, Developmental, Social, and/or Organizational Psychology, Humanities, etc.  All our coaches have undergone Harvard Business School Training in Coaching.  We monitor and analyze research in the sciences of minds and brains for its applicability to real action, but employ no one-size-fits-all formulas.  We deal with the particular needs of different organizations and individuals, at a particular period of their development.  Each and every stage of our involvement, from the initial needs assessment through implementation and continuous feedback evaluation, is dynamic, interactive, and customer-tailored.

Our Team

The Corporate Psychology & Mental Fitness, LLC founder and CEO, Dr. Yanina Shapiro has a first hand understanding of the stresses and strains of professional jobs in private industry, state and federal government, and in academe.  An MsME graduate of a prestigious technical university in Moscow, Russia, Dr. Shapiro had enjoyed a successful engineering career in the USA, before she turned to the formal study of human cognition and memory at Harvard University.  She held positions of high responsibility in private industry (Ford Motor Co., Exxon Research & Engineering, etc.) and federal government (DOT/TSC). She taught engineering sciences at Tufts University and Franklin Institute of Boston (see CEO's resume).

Perhaps because Dr. Shapiro practiced engineering right until she began working on her doctoral dissertation at Harvard, her research interests have always revolved around human performance in everyday life rather than in research laboratories, where most of the research on human cognition and behavior has been conducted, mostly on non-human species.  Her distrust of laboratory experiments on human behavior goes back to her unwitting participation in a huge and well-controlled experiment on social conditioning in the USSR, where she was born and grew up.  She fled the USSR, as a political refugee, in the seventies, when the Cold War was still very hot.

As a doctoral student at Harvard University, Dr. Shapiro pursued her life-long interest in how people learn and remember and what role the language plays in how they learn and what they remember.  She studied cognitive and neuro- sciences, human development, philosophy, and education. Her doctoral dissertation, entitled "Towards a Neuropsychological Theory of Human Memory" was completed in 1991.  She has continued her research, presenting its findings in a number of research papers and journal articles (see CEO's resume).  She has taught psychology at a college level and has fond memories of that experience.

As a college professor, Dr. Shapiro has designed and taught a spectrum of courses in cognitive and neuro- sciences and developmental and general psychology.  It was then that she first realized that many of her students lacked the most rudimentary study, communication, organizational, and problem solving skills, which they needed to succeed in college and after college.  She incorporated the development of such skills into the courses she taught.  She also coached her traditional and non- traditional students in their professional and personal development..

Later on, she worked with mentally retarded and developmentally delayed and/or psychotic children and adults for the state of Oregon, discovering in the process that around 90% of middle management in the fields of mental health and social services relied on Prozac and/or other drugs to maintain their well-being and self-worth.  That discovery was shocking, but it was not the most disturbing discovery of that experience.  It is to her brief and intensely unhappy affair with the field of mental health that Dr. Shapiro owes both her determination to divorce the field and her devotion to the mental health problems prevention, which is what Mental Fitness® is about.

The thought of finances never too far from an entrepreneur's mind, we came up with an idea for raising money for Mental Fitness® through the virtual estate speculation.  Thus, a collection of valuable domain names was created and put up for sale at www.Potent-Domain-Names.com, which since has become a web site of Idea Merchants CO. In the process of looking for a broker for our cyber holdings, Dr. Shapiro realized that the domain name buyer had absolutely no service, because the virtual market fell in the hands of former real estate people, who preach the language crisis for the sake of making millions of dollars on the sale of generic domain names.  Meantime, the small business owner and/or domain name buyer need help in figuring out which domain names are good for promoting their business and/or product.

We saw to that need and created Domain Name Advisor, which offers on line naming and branding consulting services and creates business and product names that are meaningful and memorable, and that do not have a million dollar price tag. Of course, Dr. Shapiro's expertise in memory and language research came handy in that endeavor.  And her academic associates constitute as valuable an asset for the domain name creation division as they do for our major business of Corporate Psychology & Mental Fitness, LLC.  Stop by www.DNadvisor.com and find out more about the domain name creation and consulting services offered by Idea Merchants Co.  To see the list of domain names for sale, visit www.AahDomain.com and www.Santa-Sends.com .

Until very recently, Corporate Psychology & Mental Fitness has been Dr. Shapiro's DBA and an umbrella for various businesses.  Dr. Shapiro's academic associates have been a valuable asset for the business of Corporate Psychology & Mental Fitness and often joined her in virtual and actual project teams.

As of October, 2001, Corporate Psychology & Mental Fitness, LLC became a limited liability corporation.  Consequently, we are about to begin search of both associates and investors.  The Corporate Psychology and Mental Fitness, LLC consultants must have Ph.D. level training in psychology and additional training in Mental Fitness® Please let us know if you are interested in either or both opportunities..
